Texas Tech was a late comer to the Heavyweight Football Championship scene, with their first game not coming until 1964.
The 1991 Red Raiders captured the title with a win over Baylor on November 16. They managed to hold the title in their season finale against Houston in a 52-46 slugfest. The fact that the 1991 team finished 6-5 and did not go to a bowl illustrates the one argument against the whole Heavyweight Football Champs concept, as it was clearly not a contender for the National Championship as most see it. To which we at Heavyweight Football Champs respond with our 'Buster Douglas' defense.
Things were different in 2008 as Texas Tech took on top ranked and reigning Champion Texas. Tech had proven itself with solid wins against some tough competition and in an epic battle of Big 12 South Giants, Tech reclaimed the crown by defeating Texas.
