1920-1939

The 1920's and 1930's were really interesting for what they represented, the beginning of the traditional powerhouses. Notre Dame, Nebraska, Southern California, Washington, Alabama, Tennessee, to name a few. Maybe more important is that this era was sort of the 'out of Eden' time for the heavyweight football title. While the title had settled pretty well west into what we would now call 'Big 10 Country', it never moved beyond the Mississippi River until 1923 when Nebraska defeated Notre Dame. It moved further west the next year when Southern California defeated Syracuse, and then finally moved south of the Mason Dixon Line for the first time when Alabama won the 1926 Rose Bowl.

A significant date in the history of heavyweight college football is November 8, 1924. For the first time, a champion team lost to a non-heavyweight team. West Virginia Wesleyan defeated Syracuse 7-3. Because WVW did not qualify for the crown, Syracuse retained the championship despite the loss.

Another interesting phenomenon is that of the doubleheaders. At least according to the records I've had available, on September 26, 1924, Southern California appears to have played both Whittier and California Tech. Then again on September 23, 1924, they again played Whittier, with a second game against Occidental. It would be interesting if anyone has information of other colleges having played doubleheaders like this. While many of the schools in the late 1800's were playing games every 2 or 3 days, i didn't notice any doubleheaders while doing my research.
