In 1895 an unknown college football team known as the Cardinals made their way up to face a much better known Northwestern University football team, after a summer in which there were a number of tornadoes that hit the state of Iowa. After a 36-0 upset thrashing of Northwestern, the next day's headline in the Chicago Tribune read "Iowa Cyclone devastates Evanstontown." Since that time, the Cyclone name has stuck with the team.
That may be the highlight of college football history for Iowa State however, especially in Heavyweight title matches. They are 0-7 in championship games, with the closest score being a 26-14 game against Nebraska in 1923. Most of their title opportunities came as a result of annual games against powers Nebraska and Oklahoma, with one match against Iowa. It does appear that the team is improving, and with the title being held by Texas at the time of this writing, maybe this can be the year they claim thir first Heavyweight National Championship.
