Missouri's first shot at the title was perhaps their best. In 1924 they fought Southern California to a 20-20 tie, unfortunately not able to take the title as it cannot be taken in a tie. Missouri's often had a team that played well enough to get the opportunities, but have never been able to quite take the title. The closest they came since the Southern California tie was in 1998 in a 17-14 loss to Texas A&M.
