Beakers Rants

This is for all the comments and thoughts about football and other things that might not fit into the rest of my site. Or maybe they will fit and I just want to post here. Like I think someone will want to read them? (If you do happen to be reading this, thank you. You gave my ego a nice boost)

15 minutes of fame-peat

The boys at one-peat claim to have raised their money. They expect to put up a billboard in LA that makes a point that USC only won one national championship, not two.

And.... the world will see it and say, so?

You know the guy who always knew how to botch a perfectly good joke? Or maybe that was you. Too many times, that was me. We'd screw the punchline up, or our timing would be just dreadful. Or we'd make up our own joke or wisecrack and expect people to roll with laugher, only we end up being faced with blank stares. Actually, the worst for me was to tell a story of something hilarious that happened to myself or to a group of friends. And i'd be done with the story and everyone is looking at me with an expression that is saying "go on, get to the funny part." And suddenly it becomes clear, there was no funny part. So the only way to bail out is to state, well, you just had to be there.

I think this is going to be the case for the Onepeat guys. They get their money, they erect their billboard, and they think they've made a great statement. And people will look at it like, "huh?" One, football season is over, two, most people there don't care, and did i mention football season is over? And since USC didn't get their 3-peat, no one's really talking much about them having had two championships to begin with.

It's like they say, timing is everything.

I was reading some of the LSU forums and blogs, and most LSU fans that i've read from are embarassed by this. I don't blame them. The purpose of it is 'to set the record straight' according to the guys at onepeat. As you read more on the site, the idea was to counter all the hype about USC's "3-peat" or their shot at a third straight national title. For those who haven't heard, the issue they have is that USC didn't play in the so-called official championship game in 2003 (though there IS NO official championship game) and so they weren't national champions. There was a feeling that all the hype over USC's run diminished LSU's championship in 2003.

What these guys are doing instead is presenting themselves as a bunch of petty whiners who are insecure about their own team's accomplishments. And in the end, they don't meet any of their objectives. They don't set the record straight because no one will be convinced by this billboard. They don't diminish the hype because the hype is already gone. And frankly, instead of 'protecting' the reputation of LSU's national championship, they tarnish it instead. They've made a joke of LSU's 2003 team, which is a total shame because LSU had a great team that year. They've done more to hurt the standing of that team than any hype for USC ever could have done.

In a manner of weeks or however long it takes for them to get their billboard up, they'll discover that feeling for themselves.

Congrats, Texas.
I've used some of your quotes on this post to fortify my arguments. Hope it is fine.
