Beakers Rants
This is for all the comments and thoughts about football and other things that might not fit into the rest of my site. Or maybe they will fit and I just want to post here. Like I think someone will want to read them? (If you do happen to be reading this, thank you. You gave my ego a nice boost)

Are you serious??????
Or, well, so i get asked... Okay, I don't get asked, I just assume people might when they look at the main site. I'm probably not alone when I go searching for references to my site out on the internet. I'm seeing it mentioned on a few sites here and there, and it's getting to a point now where I don't even have to shamelessly plug it by emailing the site owners. Cuz really, how many of us are really into this for the ego boost? Getting noticed is kinda cool. So anyway, I'm getting to something here. I think. The comments I see are generally about like this -- I don't agree with it or endorse it, but it's interesting. Hey, I'll take the interesting part. (that ego thing, remember?) So the question then becomes... am i really serious? Do I really expect this to gain some kind of groundswell of momentum that will overthrow the evil BCS? If I do... start looking for those men with white coats to be making their way to my place. So am i serious? Yes and no. No, I don't expect this to become some major movement. I expect this site to be an interesting novelty site that will be fun for football enthusiasts and football history buffs to say huh, that's interesting. So far, I'm ecstatic over getting that. Plain and simple, I want this to be a college football lover's site. I'm not trying to convince anyone that the heavyweight concept is THE way to go. Rather, the idea is more like, have you ever thought of it this way? I want to make this a good reference to other sites for college football lovers to find what they're looking for, even if it's not on this site. This is one reason for the team pages. At the same time, there is a level of seriousness. Because let's face it, the college football national championship is just as mythical as it's always been. I'll agree that the BCS is far better than anything we've ever had. If it weren't for the BCS, Texas and USC never would have played. USC would be in the Rose and Texas in the Orange. I remember there was a lot of belly aching from some Big 10 and Pac 10 traditionalists when the Rose Bowl finally joined up with everyone else. But after this last Rose Bowl, I didn't hear a lot of complaints then. I've argued a lot with some of the LSU fans, something that has led me to ask myself, when will i ever learn? Some day I'll figure out that some people are so set that opening their mind is totally impossible. They cannot understand that the whole situation in 2003 points out the one gaping flaw in the BCS. Now personally, I prefer the BCS to a full blown 16 or 32 team playoff system (that rant is still to come). But the one thing that the Onepeat guys can't get their head around is, there is no official national champion in college football. Not even with the BCS. The NCAA does not sanction or operate or control or legislate the BCS in any way shape or form. The only control the NCAA has at all is they sanction the bowl games themselves. As long as the governing body of the sport and all the affected entities of the sport are not involved in the system, there will never be an official national champion. What these guys don't understand is that the BCS Doesn't have any authority in and of itself. The only way that it could even claim to create a national championship game is by getting one of the recognized authorities to go along with them, with the coach's poll essentially agreeing to vote the winner as national champion. So while they claim that the polls don't have any authority any more, the truth of the matter is that the only authority the BCS has came as a result of the already recognized authority of one poll. Okay, so, am i rambling? Of course, I always do that. But I am getting somewhere with this. I'm getting back to the yes part of the 'am i serious?' question. All this is to make the point there is no national champion in college football. There are entities that will declare a national champion, but the only ruling authority in college football does not have a national championship established in their jurisdiction. As long as there is no year end national champion, then there's a good spot for a running National Champion such as Heavyweight Football Champs. I don't expect that everyone is going to get on board and say that this is the way to do everything. But, I do think that as this site gets established, I'm expecting to see it get enough attention from time to time, that eventually teams like North Texas might actually get a little more excited about their matchups because they can see it as playing for something they might not otherwise have a chance to play for. Of course, every once in awhile, someone will still say it's stupid but interesting. Hey, I'll take that.
