Onepeat Part Deaux
Actually part three, but that looks better.
While all the sniping back and forth started by the Onepeat billboard debacle is just downright silly, the whole national championship theme of this site keeps me intrigued.
Check out Onepeatbog. The response to the whole Onepeat thing is hilarious. Okay, he maybe goes a little too far with the whole southern hick thing. But if you've read the boards where people try to debate this whole thing and listen to the line of reason used, the so-called dialogue at the bottom of the page rings pretty true.
It looked like there might be rumblings of a brawl starting between Nebraska and Michigan fans on the MZone blog. There was a pretty classy post about Nebraska fans, after the Alamo bowl. And there are a few of the rumblings here and there from both sides now their team would have beaten the other. cooler heads have prevailed. So far anyway

I am an Aggie and hate the tiggers like anyone else, but dam, they have a strong argument. Read it

No, the NCAA doesn't officially sanction a national championship. The NCAA wouldn't so that's when the major conferences stepped in and created a national championship. Because all the major conferences, including USC's PAC 10, agreed to the BCS, it seems it needs no more legitimacy than that.
I mean, in a certain sense, a national championship system should arise from those who participate in it.
Oh, believe me, I've read it. In fact in several places where you, i mean he, has left it.
It makes a nice argument as to why LSU was the better team that year. My personal opinion is that they were the better team. However, no matter how strong a case either team makes, it's meaningless unless it's settled on the field.
The major question is, what did they agree to when they agreed to the BCS?
Here's where the guy makes a major flaw. He states: "The BCS contract explicitly states that there is only one national championship game." He's posted this on several blogs. When challenged to show the language that states that there is no other national champion, he cannot produce it. He states that he's seen it, but has stated that the burden of proof is on USC to prove it's not there
Do you remember 1994? or 1997? Those years, you had undefeated teams that had a claim to being the best, but could not play each other because of the conference alignments. Particularly that the Big 10 was committed to the Rose Bowl. Penn State and Nebraska were not allowed to play each other in 1994. Michigan and Nebraska the same in 1997. This is the problem that the BCS was designed to fix, making sure that the way was cleared so the top two teams could play each other.
There is nothing in the BCS website, NCAA documentation or anything that explicitly says that the BCS championship game is the ONLY National Championship Game. There is no language, in the BCS site or documentation or in the NCAA site or documentation that rules out any possibility of a split national championship.
Therefore, there is no agreement by USC or anyone else that excludes the AP poll of the position they have always had. Thus there is nothing official that says there is or can only be one national champion.
Thanks, Beaker. I knew that as a Trojan, I always liked the Cornhuskers. I've made the same point many times but they don't want to listen. I've even made the legal arguments but they fell on deaf ears. Their purpose is not a dialogue but to diminish USC's accomplishements.
Several years ago I had the privilege of going on the field at Lincoln for pictures. The people there were great (my brother-in-law lives there). Hope you come to L.A. next year for the game.
