The Beak is Back
I wonder if anyone has done a study on blogs to see what the most posted phrase is in blogdom. My guess is it's something like what I'm about to say: Sorry it's taken so long to post.
I'm sure that at least some kind of comment about having been away from blogging for a long time has to be at or near the top of the list of most common posts. That's the whole nature of blogging, you have a small number percentage wise who are dilligent at keeping their blogs up to date. And then there are the rest, such as myself who start out strong, and then.... nada.
And of course, also high on the list has to be 'But I expect to do a lot better from here on.' To which any readers who do remain tend to say, yeah right.
Of course, the interesting thing is that while those are probably extremely common posts, they probably also rank right near the bottom on the list of most-read posts. For a simple reason. When you go several months without writing anything (hand sheepishly raised here) then, if anyone DOES happen to have been reading your blog, well, after so long, they kinda give up, you know? So, who's going to be there to read it?
Hmmmm...... Okay, I have to say, that does leave me thinking, okay, so... just why IS it i'm here writing again? Maybe it's just to hear myself talk, in a figurative sort of way. Or now that my life is settled down now, maybe it's that I expect to regain the little momentum I had right after starting this blog, and site.
It's funny, I received an email from someone a couple of months ago who said they're a big fan of this blog and think I've done an excellent job with it. That cracked me up. One, I may not be the smartest guy on earth, but I sure don't have any delusions of anyone being a big fan of this blog. There are plenty of blogs worthy of big fans, but wit the total lack of consistency so far, this is not one of them. And I know more than anyone that I've done a crappy job with it. But it was a nice butter up attempt all the same. But no, I didn't acquiesce to their request for a link exchange. (How was that for a good use of a fancy word? I'll admit i'm not even sure i spelled it right.)
Oh, that thing about link exchanges reminds me. If you've ever noticed my site before, you may have noticed there are some links pages missing. When I started out, I got involved with a link exchange program, and pretty quickly had links to a few hundred other sites of all types. Most of them were totally unrelated to the College Football theme of this site. I finally made the decision that I'd prefer to make this more of a college football resource site and not prostitute myself to all these others. The fact of the matter is, I had more or less given my endorsement to several hundred sites that i had no idea what i was endorsing. All I was doing is trying to get people to link back to my site. For all I know i could have been linking to sites with philosophies and ideals diametrically opposed to my own. Not that there's a lot of moral and philosophical integrity to a website and blog about college football. But I decided that I wanted to link for the sake of linking, not for the sake of some search engine optimization. If I do a good job at putting this site together, people will come and people will find it. If i don't, well, in the end i don't deserve to have some inflated search engine ranking. So I eliminated most of those links. If by chance you own one of the sites to whom I'd linked before, and who had linked back to mine, please accept my apologies. I totally understand if you should wish to delete your link to my site.
In the end, what I want is to have people link to my site because it's relevant, because they like what it is about and they want other people to know about it. And I want to do the same with sites and blogs that I discover. I do still request link exchanges, and I will continue to consider link exchange requests. However, when I make a request, what I do is say I thought your site was relevant to what mine is, so I've posted a link to it. I'd love a return link, however I don't expect it, and my link is not contingent upon a reciprocal link.
Wow, maybe I should just refer people to htis post when corresponding about link exchanges. It would make things easier. Though I have to say, making them endure a long boring diatribe like htis might drive them away.
So anyway, back to the whole being away thing. It's been an interesting time in BeakerWorld. I recently moved to the Washington DC area and started a new job out there. This is a bit of a change for a cornfed Nebraska boy who's used to a little slower pace. But that's okay, I love it here so far (except for the traffic. I'm used to getting 50 miles in about 40 minutes. Here, sometimes getting 5 miles in that amount of time is doing well. But the nice thing is I get to see college football from a different perspective. And in Lincoln Nebraska, the closest D1 college football team other than the Huskers was about 140 miles (K-State). At least around here, there's some variety.
I think this is long enough for now. Good gosh, you'd think i was trying to get all of 4 months worth of writing into one post.
