Cool Invite
I got a nice email from Travis at College Rivals. He's got a fun site that looks like it was first set up as a pick 'em contest, but now he's got some ambitious plans to develop a Fan Poll using some writers and bloggers. This will be his second year of the poll. It was an honor getting asked to participate in the poll this year.
I'm planning to introduce the Beaker Poll once the season gets rolling. I put together a little program a few years ago that ranked teams based on the teams they beat. It won't be any good until a few weeks into the season, as it doesn't rely on any preseason rankings. Unlike a lot of the big computer polls out there, it's something that once the concept is explained i think anyone could duplicate, which I hope helps illustrate the objectivity of the poll.
The premise is pretty simple. At least I think so anyway, though when i try to describe it i confuse people. It lines up well with the Heavyweight Football Champs concept because it's based on who a team beats. Very simply put, a team is rewarded for the quality of the teams it beats, and penalized for the lack of quality of teams that beat them.
To begin with, a team gets a point for every win over a Division 1A school. It loses a point for every loss.
Then, a team gets a bonus point for a quality win. A quality win is a win over a bowl eligible team. Therefore, it gets a point for every 6 wins by the teams it beats. To balance it all out, a team loses a point for every 6 losses by the teams that beat it.
One thing is very different, and it's for a reason. Okay, Say that Ohio State beats Texas. Texas goes on to beat Nebraska but lose to Oklahoma. Say that all three teams go undefeated the rest of the season (I know, a fantasy for a Nebraska fan, but, a guy can dream, right?) Ohio State gets credit for all of Texas' wins. It even gets a secondary credit for all of Nebraska's wins (going back to the quality win by Texas over Nebraska). However, Ohio State gets no credit at all for anything that Oklahoma does.
This is done very for a very simple reason: The poll is designed to not reward losing. I've seen too many computers give a bump to a team simply for losing to a good team. The way I see it, losing is losing. So very simply, you get rewarded for your wins, and for teh quality of teams you beat. You get penalized for losses, and for the poorness of teams that beat you.
Know what? I hate that it's only June. Football season is still too far away.
