Beakers Rants

This is for all the comments and thoughts about football and other things that might not fit into the rest of my site. Or maybe they will fit and I just want to post here. Like I think someone will want to read them? (If you do happen to be reading this, thank you. You gave my ego a nice boost)

Interesting Question

I had the question posed to me, if Southern Cal has to forfeit some games due to eligibility issues with Reggie Bush, what does that do to the heavyweight crown? It does pose an interesting dilemma. Do we take the first forfeit and award the title to that game, or continue to recognize the title as it lays.

There have been teams in the past who've had to forfeit some previous games do to NCAA issues, and it makes it an interesting question as to whether any title games have been affected in the past.

At least for now, In the event of such a forfeit, whether now or for past games, I won't be making any changes. The concept of this all is to settle it on the field, and even if USC ends up having to forfeit, say, the UCLA game, most people will look at USC as having won that game. Also, since further games have been played since that fact, i'm not sure it's feasible to go back and undo the current structure. In a lot of ways I guess I look at it kind of like if a play is made after a controversial call, then it's done and settled and there's no going back.

I think it's something that I can't go and base on opinion. Because honestly, my personal opinion is that to make a team forfeit because a player got an agent too early isn't right. I mean i know there can be good arguments both ways and i respect that, but in the end, i think that's a lot different than if you paid a player to come play for your school and got an unfair recruiting edge as a result. now i don't think the NCAA should look the other way either, because yes, if a player's suddenly driving nicer cars and wearing nicer clothes, you gotta say hey, where's the money coming from and teams need to keep a reign on things. But i guess where i'm coming from on that one is, i don't see anything that USC did that was against the rules that gave it an unfair advantage over someone else as a result of breaking rules. But that said, I can't make a decision based on opinions on whether it's a good forfeit or not.

In the end, it's going to be something clear cut. Once the next game is played, the previous game is settled and the championship remains where it is.

Good thing this isn't as widely known a website or who knows that i might not have a huge amount of controversy stirred up by that one, eh?
