French football giant Paris St. Germain qualified for the round of 16 at the ongoing UEFA Champions League tournament.

They joined La Liga side Atletico Madrid, German champions Bayern Munich, and Group A log leaders, Arsenal in making the final 16 with two games to go.

Thomas Meunier got a late winner for the French side as they defeated Basel 2-1 in a hard-fought encounter. French star Blaise Matuidi got the game’s opener in before Luca Zuffi equalized for the hosts. At a point, it seemed as if both sides would share the spoils before Meunier’s late winner. The victory meant PSG were through to the next stage with games to go. Basel goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik tried his best to stop the visitors from getting a victory but he could not stop the 90th minute volley. Basel put up a spirited contest despite Serey Die being sent off after picking up two yellow cards. PSG and Arsenal are the two sides to continue from the group. Edinson Cavani grabbed a crucial brace that helped Paris Saint Germain defeat Ludogorets to secure their first win in the UEFA Champions League this season.

PSG won the game 3-1, but Cavani’s goals were important to seal the victory.

PSG manager Unai Emery played a draw in the group’s opening performance against Arsenal. For a team that wants European success badly, they had to quickly get over the 2-0 loss in the French Ligue 1 to Toulouse to win their game against Ludogorets. The Bulgarian side got the first goal of the game in the 15th minute through Natanael. PSG could not afford another slip, so they fought back hard to get an equalizer through Blaise Matuidi. Cavani’s two goals ensured PSG equalled Arsenal’s four points from two games.

Paris St. Germain found themselves were under pressure from very early in the game. Thiago Motta fouled Svetoslav Dyakov on the edge of the area. The host were awarded a free kick which Natanael scored, beating goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. PSG came all out after conceding the goal. The consistent attacks proved a bargain when they equalized.

French champions Paris Saint Germain are set to get a new coach in the coming season as current coach Laurent Blanc is expected to leave the club this week.

The manager’s agent Jean-Pierre Bernes told French radio station Europe 1, that the coach would leave the club. Blanc has won the domestic treble in each of his last two seasons with PSG, having won the French Ligue 1 crown in all three campaigns of his tenure.

Blanc, who is 50 years old, signed a new two-year contract extension in February but his spell at Parc des Princes is now set to end. Bernes said:

“We’re in discussions with PSG directors and it’s being done in an excellent atmosphere from both sides. Simply put, there are rules that need to be respected to end a contract and PSG are respecting those.”

The reason behind the sack is speculated as the limitations in Europe. The likely replacement for Blanc is Unai Emery. Emery departed Sevilla after leading the Spanish side to three straight Europa League titles. The club believes with more funds and better players, Emery would be able to get PSG to a farther place in the European tournament. Continue reading PSG TO GET A NEW COACH FOR THE COMING SEASON

Paris Saint-Germain eliminated again at the quarter-final stage

Paris Saint-Germain has again been beaten at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League.

This is the fourth consecutive season that the French club failed to make it to the semi-final. After having drawn the first leg 2-2, Paris Saint-Germain could not make up their deficit and instead conceded another goal that put them out of the competition.

Despite having the lion share of the possession, Paris Saint-Germain failed to create enough goal scoring opportunities. When they did breach the Manchester City defence, they found Hart on their way. The City keeper made three decisive saves that prevented PSG from scoring.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was incredibly silent during this game, and the only dangerous occasion he had was on a free-kick. His shot was on target but unfortunately was well saved by the Manchester City keeper.

At the other end, Manchester City was happy to sit back and to hit PSG on the counter. They had a couple of chances, but Aguero missed the target. They were even awarded a penalty because of a foul of Kevin Trapp. Sergio Aguero missed the penalty which could have put Manchester City ahead earlier in the game.

Instead, it was Kevin de Bruyne who would score the only goal of the game in the 76th minute. The Belgium international benefited from a good service of Fernando. His precise shot did not give any chance to the PSG keeper. Continue reading Paris Saint-Germain eliminated again at the quarter-final stage

Laurent Blanc says that he is extremely lucky

Laurent Blanc says that he is extremely lucky to have avoided a tie against Barcelona in the quarter finals of the Champions League.

The French outfit went past Chelsea with relative ease in the last 16 round. They were so strong against the English champions that many now see PSG as a real alternative to the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich for the title. The strength in depth is a major reason behind PSG being backed heavily against the likes of Real Madrid or other European clubs with better pedigree.

In the past, PSG have gone past the last 16 round only to be knocked out by Barcelona. Blanc says that he feels extremely fortunate to have avoided the Catalan club, who are closing in on a run of 14 matches unbeaten in all competitions. The trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar will prove difficult for any team to handle. PSG are no exception even though they have some of the best defenders in the world like Thiago Silva and David Luiz. Coming up against Barcelona would have also reduced any advantage that PSG might have when it comes to resting players. After their league success with eight games to spare, the club can afford to rest players but Barcelona are also in a similar position. Laurent Blanc has denied that he played Edinson Cavani as a proper striker in the Toulouse game the other day to make sure that the Uruguayan is pleased.

Cavani had mostly been played in the wide positions in the summer and it was reported that he was not enjoying that and was pondering what he had to do regarding his future.

When Blanc had been asked for his thoughts on Cavani’s situation ahead of PSG’s visit to Toulouse, he had clearly said that he would not change his formation just for the sake of the happiness of a particular player.

But, in the game at Stadium Municipal, he used Cavani in the striking role which made many people believe that the boss did so just to make his superstar player happy.

However, according to Blanc, it was not about making somebody happy. The reason why Cavani was used in a slightly different role that day to what he had been used in earlier in the season was that the team needed somebody who could play an attacking game at that point of time.

In the words of Blanc, “The opposition had three centre halves. So, I needed an attacker and out of the options that I had at that point of time, I thought Edison was the right one to go onto the pitch on the place of Javier.”

“It all depends on whom we are playing against and what the situation of the game is. I have said it before that I do things, which I think, are in the best interests of the team. I never try to please people with my selections and formations.”

Paris Saint-Germain won that Toulouse game by 1-0 to take their wins’ count to 18 in the French top tier this season.
